Pinterest signs US$4bn AWS cloud deal for AI workloads

Pinterest has signed a US$4 billion cloud deal with AWS, extending its cloud services agreement with Amazon Web Services through 2031.

The agreement is Pinterest’s largest infrastructure commitment to date. It builds on a cloud relationship that began in 2010, when Pinterest started using AWS to support the reliability and performance of its core services.

Pinterest has more than 600 million monthly users. The company said the agreement will support AI model training, inference, and platform infrastructure.

Pinterest has also worked with AWS on a large-scale data lake used across its services.

Trainium and Graviton

Under the expanded agreement, AWS will provide Pinterest with access to its cloud infrastructure and custom processors. These include AWS Graviton and Trainium chips, which Pinterest plans to use for AI workloads.

The agreement covers AI model training and inference for Pinterest features, including personalised visual search, AI-assisted discovery, and other AI tools.

Pinterest plans to use AWS Trainium to run large language models and vision-language models. AWS describes Trainium as its custom machine learning accelerator for training and running AI models.

The company is also expanding its use of AWS Graviton, which already powers roughly a third of its compute infrastructure. AWS says Graviton is used for general-purpose cloud applications.

Pinterest Chief Technology Officer Matt Madrigal said the expanded AWS commitment gives the company “compute flexibility, hardware optionality, and infrastructure efficiency” as it works on its AI plans.

Pinterest said it intends to diversify its use of accelerated computing through Amazon’s custom silicon. The company said the move is intended to improve price performance across AI workloads used in search, recommendations, and discovery.

Move to EKS

Pinterest is also moving parts of its infrastructure from traditional EC2-based environments to a Kubernetes-based architecture on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service.

Amazon EKS is AWS’s managed Kubernetes service. Pinterest said the migration is expected to improve developer speed, operational reliability, and infrastructure efficiency.

Pinterest said it has long used AI for visual discovery and personalisation through its proprietary Taste Graph, which supports use cases such as recipe search and product discovery.

The company has also launched Pinterest Assistant, a conversational discovery feature powered by open-source vision-language models. The feature adds multi-turn interaction to Pinterest’s visual search experience.

Pinterest has also introduced upgrades to its Performance+ advertising suite. The company said AI is used in the suite to support campaign automation and ad performance.

Pinterest last month forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates.
